The April 2023 edition of Bugeisha Magazine features a touching tribute to our founder and Sensei Grandmaster Walter ‘Toby’ Cooling and includes another great article written by Master Dan Popp.

The article describes in detail Master Cooling’s beginnings in the martial arts, his accomplishments and successes in Isshin-Ryu karate and in his personal life, his ties to Soke Tatsuo Shimabuku and his most notable students (Masters Steve Armstrong, Don Nagle, Harold Mitchum, and Harold Long), the founding and growth of the Order of Isshin-Ryu, his many friends and brothers within the Isshin-Ryu community, and finally the future of the Order of Isshin-Ryu Martial Arts (OIMA).

Master Dan Popp is an 8th dan in the OIMA.  He has written four books with another on the way (https://oikarate.org/books/), and several articles for Bugeisha magazine, an international publication (available on Amazon).

Bugeisha magazine is produced quarterly.  More information about the publication can be found on their website at:  bugeisha.net
